The Indoor Plant Care Guide covers the gear that keeps houseplants alive in apartments, condos and rentals, where there is no yard and rarely enough light. We publish long-term, first-hand reviews and step-by-step guides on moisture meters, full spectrum grow lights, self-watering planters, pruning tools and small humidifiers, written from a third-floor walk-up with one good window and one bad one. Every recommendation is judged on one question: did it stop a plant from dying.

Plant and Home Safety

Many common houseplants are toxic if chewed or swallowed. Pothos, philodendron, dieffenbachia, peace lily, sago palm and lilies are among the plants that can seriously harm cats, dogs and small children. Check a plant against a current toxicity list before you bring it home, keep questionable plants well out of reach, and call your vet, your doctor or a poison control center straight away if something is eaten. Do not wait to see what happens.

Fertilizers and pest treatments are chemicals, including the ones sold as natural. Follow the label dilution exactly, never mix two products together, keep them sealed and away from food and from children and pets, ventilate the room while you treat, and wash your hands and any skin that gets splashed. Neem oil, insecticidal soap and horticultural oils can still irritate skin, eyes and airways.

Grow lights carry electrical and heat risk. Do not run a light or its cord where water can reach it, do not overload an outlet or daisy chain cheap power strips, keep the fixture far enough from leaves and curtains that nothing scorches, and unplug before you move or clean it. Do not stare directly into a full spectrum panel; bright horticultural LEDs can be uncomfortable and are not meant to be looked at.

Humidifiers need real maintenance or they become the problem. Empty, rinse and dry the tank on the schedule the manufacturer gives, because standing water grows bacteria and mold that the unit will then spray into the room. Use distilled or filtered water if your tap water is hard, or you will breathe the white mineral dust it leaves behind. Do not aim the mist at a wall, a window, an outlet or directly at a plant, and do not run one continuously in a small closed room. Persistent damp encourages mold on walls, on soil and on the plants themselves.

Pruning tools are sharp. Cut away from your hand, keep blades locked when not in use and store them out of a child's reach. Wear gloves with plants that have sap, spines or irritant juice, and wash your hands after handling soil, which can carry bacteria and fungal spores. Anyone pregnant, immunocompromised or with a respiratory condition should be especially careful with potting mix dust and with mold.
